
The consumer price index in Armenia in January this year was 2.7%, instead of 2.6% in January 2016. In January 2018 inflation was 2.7% as compared with January 2017.
January inflation was mainly driven by the growth in food (including alcoholic beverages and cigarettes) by 5.7% and non-food products prices by 1.5%, as well as by 0.2% increase in service tariffs. In January, consumer prices rose by 2.5% in the capital.
The annual inflation rate in the consumer market was conditioned by the increase in prices for food and non-food products by 4% and 3.6%, and the growth of services tariffs was 0.6%, whereas the inflation was registered only for food a year ago, with an increase of 1.7% , while non-food prices dropped by 3.5%, and service prices dropped by 1.8%.
According to the statistics, the January inflation in the food market was mainly conditioned by the increase in fruits and vegetables prices by 10% and 34.3%, respectively. In comparison with January 2017, the prices for vegetables have fallen by 2.1%, and for fruit - by 0.9%. In January, prices for vegetables in the capital rose by 34.6% and for fruit – by 9.7%.
In January 2018, the price of vegetables and fruits increased by 25.11%, petrol, diesel fuel and gas by 11.2%, and this group, which in the consumer basket had 8.58% and 3.65% respectively, had a great impact on the general level of consumer prices, increasing by 2.54 percentage points.
Meat prices rose by 13.1% for a year and by 2% only in January. Prices for meat in the capital increased by 1.4%. Prices for fishery products rose by 25.9% for a year and by 0.6% only in January and 1% in the capital. Prices for dairy products, cheese and eggs rose by 7.1% year-on-year, and only 0.5% in January (0.3% in the reporting month). In January, dairy products, cheese and eggs increased by 0.5% in the capital. Non-alcoholic drinks, coffee, tea and cacao rose by 0.2% in January. Butter, vegetable oil rose by 13.5%, and 0.4% only in January, mainly due to 1% and 0.8% drop in prices for butter and margarine.
Sugar prices fell by 8.1 % for a year, only by 0.4 percent in January and by 0.6 percent in the capital. In January prices for bread and cereals fell 0.2%. Prices for confectionery, alcohol and cigarettes in January remained unchanged.
Prices for carpets and floor coverings in the non-food commodity market rose by 0.1%, for furniture - by 0.5%, household appliances - by 0.7%, glass and household goods - by 1.1% and pharmaceutical products by 1.3%. At the same time, in January prices for shoes and clothes fell by 4.7% and 2.7% respectively. In January prices for petrol, diesel fuel, and car charging gas increased by 5.4%, 16.3% and 11.8%, respectively, and 28.7%, 37.3% and 10.9% for a year respectively. Non-food products prices in the capital increased by 0.8%.
Prices for services increased by 0.2% in January, while prices for transport services increased by 0.2%, tariffs for education increased by 0.8%, culture and recreation – by 2.1%, hotels – by 4.4% %: The tariffs for services in the capital increased by 0.1% in January.
