As a result of the elections held during the plenary session of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Armenia was elected a member of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for a three-year term.

According to the Press, Information and Public Relations Department of the Armenian Foreign Ministry, the Economic and Social Council coordinates the activities of UN specialized agencies, functional committees, programs and foundations and regional commissions in economic, social, environmental and related fields. The UN body includes members from 54 countries. The Economic and Social Council is a central platform for the provision of relevant consultations to Member States and the UN system for the elaboration and discussion of international economic and social issues.

Armenia is elected a member of the Economic and Social Council for the first time (2004-06), reaffirming its commitment to supporting international efforts to promote sustainable development and bringing its national contribution to the Council's work.
