The Central Bank of Armenia called information about the devaluation of the dram and default a fiction by media. This was announced on the Facebook page by the head of the Central Bank’s Public Relations Service Harutyun Berberyan.

"News" published this morning in one of the daily newspapers has nothing to do with reality. Moreover, such fiction news tends to create negative expectations and to form artificial behavior. That is why I urge the media not to turn the terms and topics related to inflation, the exchange rate, reserves, deposits, loans and the financial system into “selling” news. Today, the financial system of Armenia is a stable and well-established system, and invented news on all the above issues can create unreasonable expectations among the population, which are irrelevant from the point of view of the country's long-term development", Berberyan said, adding that the Bank is ready to give comprehensive and informative answers to within its competence and professional capabilities.

It should be noted that on December 15 the “Zhamanak” newspaper, citing sources close to the government, wrote that after the New Year holidays Armenia may face serious financial problems, and it is possible that the authorities will take a course to devalue dram by about 20 percent. The newspaper also reported that the default, which has long been predicted by various experts, will no longer be delayed.
