The single European currency did not become a means of leveling the economies of the eurozone countries; on the contrary, as a result of the recent crisis, the gap between the rich and poor eurozone countries widened. This was stated by the Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs Pierre Moscovisi at a press conference in Brussels after the meeting of the Eurogroup - the Council of Ministers of Finance of the euro area.

"The euro zone, as conceived, did not lead to automatic leveling of the economic development of its states. On the contrary, since the last crisis, we see that the gap between the richest and poorest countries is only widening, and this is the main reason for the growing Euro-aggressiveness of populist parties," he said.

During the global financial crisis in 2008–2009 and the ensuing sovereign debt crisis of the euro area in 2010–2014, the level of public debt in the euro area countries grew by almost 30% from 64.9% of total GDP in 2007 to 91.9% of GDP in 2017. At the same time, the level of debt of the southern countries of the community per capita is several times higher than the level of debt of the northern states.
