Modernization project of the new energy block of Yerevan Thermal Power Plant in 2018 will cost about $ 15 million. The Government of Japan has allocated more than $ 220 million for the construction of a combined steam turbine power unit in Yerevan's thermal power plant.

The energy block construction project, in particular, started in 2008, the project was completed in 2010. In the same year Starting from April, 2010 it was commissioned and connected to the power system of Armenia. Gevorgyan mentioned that as a result of the 8-year work, about 12 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity was generated, the capacity of the power unit is 240 megawatts.

With the funding of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, all modern technology solutions for the power unit construction have been implemented, both in terms of automated management and all new technological advances. Gevorgyan mentioned that this power unit is considered to be the most efficient among the thermal power plants of the energy system, as the efficiency coefficient of the compensation cycle is about 50 %.

In 2018 it is envisaged to carry out the modernization of the gas turbine unit "Henickel 2" during the capital repair of the energy block, which is equipped with the latest achievements of these gas turbines- with technical innovations. This will result in an increase of around 7 megawatts and a 1 percent increase in efficiency coefficient, which means that the power unit will be more profitable.
