SWIFT finagent

Kurt Walker, the special representative of the US State Department for Ukraine, said that Russian ships could be denied access to European ports. In addition, Russian banks may be disconnected from the international SWIFT system.

Such measures may be a response to Russia's aggression against Ukraine, in particular, the seizure of Ukrainian courts in the Kerch Strait, reports Voice of America.

Walker stressed that the territorial waters near the Crimea are Ukrainian, so Russia cannot claim complete control over the Kerch Strait.

As noted by Walker, the United States is demanding that Russia return the captured Ukrainian sailors and ships. According to the diplomat, the secretary general of the Christian Democratic Union in Germany, Andbertrat Kramp-Karrenbauer proposed closing European ports for Russian ships arriving from Azov and Crimea.

Another step in forcing Russia into constructive negotiations is to disconnect Russian banks from the international SWIFT network.

Walker said that this is a "nuclear option", which will threaten the costs not only of Russia, but also of the allies.

However, according to Walker, it is necessary to consider the possibility of such a measure, since it is no longer possible to look at how Russia is taking new steps of aggression towards its neighbors.
