The German authorities are assessing the possibility of merging the two largest banks in the country, German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz and Deutsche Bank's Chief Executive Officer Christian Seeing are taking part in the discussion of possible options for the deal, reports Bloomberg.

It is reported that negotiations are still at an early stage.

According to sources at the agency, the parties "appreciated the ability of the German government to support the merger of banks."

Against this background, Deutsche Bank securities rose by 8% on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, and Commerzbank shares rose by 6.1%.

Rumors of a possible merger between Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank spread several years ago. The first message about the possibility of this merger appeared in 2016.

In September, it was reported that the German government supported the merger of two large banks, Commerzbank and Deutsche Bank. The authorities intend to create a powerful bank to support national exports in the event of a financial crisis, reports Bloomberg. Sources said the decision has already been made.
